Korea, ICAO Sign Aviation Training Pact

Korea has agreed with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to jointly provide training programs in Korea from 2007 for aviation technicians from developing countries.

On Sept. 12, Transportation Minister Choo Byung-jik signed the agreement, dispatched after ICAO Secretary General Taieb Cherif signed it.

Korea is the second country with which the ICAO has ever concluded a pact on joint aviation training, following Singapore, a ministry official said.

The pact tells that the ICAO has authorized the country’s aviation training program being offered since 2001 as an international standard course.

As a result, the Korea Civil Aviation Academy (KCAA), an initiator of the training program, is expected to emerge as a world-class aviation training body, along with those of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the official said.

Under the joint program, Korea will invite 117 aviation technicians from developing countries over the next three years from 2007 to the three courses offered by the KCAA, affiliated with the Korean Airports Corporation, headquartered in Chongwon, North Chungchong Province.

One course is on VHF omni-directional range (VOR) maintenance, another on global maintenance satellite system (GNSS) and the third on radar approach control.
