GM Adding Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle To California Fleet
General Motors and the U.S. Postal Service shift their experience with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles into a higher gear starting today.
A minivan, going into service in Irvine, California, will be the second for the Postal Service. The vehicles emit only water vapor.
There has been a similar vehicle around Washington D.C. over the past two years. GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss says the test has found that the vehicle is reliable, having delivered more than 600,000 pieces of mail.
GM recently announced it will build more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell vehicles next fall, as it continues to test the new technology.
Obstacles remain for large scale deployment of the technology, including the need for a system of fueling stations. Nearly every automaker is developing hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Hydrogen cells also produce less noise and heat than a typical internal combustion engine.
